Movie Review:

The longest movie I have ever been through. It reminded me of a childhood experence watching Tora Tora with the writing on the screen. Most people have been through the loss of a pet. It is something private.

Watching the actors watch a dog fake death exploits a very special, private moment. I just kept thinking this is so special and then I would think "but this is just for money". Why fake something so special? Money? Ratings? Same thing with the miss carriage. What a sad moment in someone's live.

Using that like the dying dog to get ratings from an emotinal experence? What a sad day. Keep special moments sacred and special for the many of us who have really grieved through them. Somethings cannot be used for emotions to get up the ratings.

Movie Review:

Dec. 19, 2008 | There's no aroma so pungent as the air of desperation that hangs around a fading comic, which is why we should be grateful that Jim Carrey's new comedy, "Yes Man," isn't being presented in Odorama. Gifted comics almost invariably go bad at some point, possibly because great comedy demands a touch of craziness, a willingness to go to extremes. And any extreme, hit over and over again, becomes tiresome. In choosing his roles over the years, Carrey may have had some sense of that himself, and although it's hard to forgive him for subjecting us to the hell that was "The Number 23," in other cases -- most notably, "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind" -- he's made unpredictable choices that turned out to be good ones.

But "Yes Man" is nothing but a predictable choice for Carrey, a predictably wrong one. Carrey plays Carl, a guy who says no to everything. He's missed so many social events that his friends have almost given up on him. We don't really know why he's uninterested in anything and everything -- the one clue that's dropped heavily is that he hasn't gotten over his failed marriage -- other than that he's just a perpetually negative guy.

One day an old pal (played by John Michael Higgins) drops in from nowhere and invites Carl to a self-help seminar run by a guru who favors flashy brocade shirts (Terence Stamp, who at least lends some solemn elegance to the proceedings). Suddenly, as the result of a "covenant" the guru supposedly hexes him with, Carl begins saying yes to everything. (The premise is more than vaguely reminiscent of Carrey's "Liar Liar.") In fact, Carl can't say no to anything: He finds himself helplessly ordering up Middle Eastern brides, courtesy of PersianWifeFinder.com; he treks out enthusiastically to see questionable performance art; he gives rides to thankless bums who ask to borrow his cellphone and then run down the battery.
ut as a result of saying yes with so little restraint, he does meet a cute girl: Allison (the always adorable -- perhaps too adorable -- Zooey Deschanel) is a singer who rides around on a motorbike dressed in a mod-style black patent leather coat. She also teaches a class that combines yoga with photography -- zany! Finally, Carl's life is turning around.

It must also, of course, turn upside down, so we'll have lots of chances to watch Carrey go all crazy and kooky. But "Yes Man" -- directed by Peyton Reed ("Bring It On," "The Break-Up") and written by Nicholas Stoller, Jarrad Paul and Andrew Mogel -- is almost unbearably lifeless, even as it struggles to provide some sort of framework for Carrey's ever-escalating mania. Carrey pulls every old trick out of the bag here: He does a crazy pratfall in a restaurant; he "impresses" his new girlfriend with inappropriate stalker wisecracks; he binds his face with Scotch tape so that his features take on the freakishness of Lon Chaney's Phantom of the Opera. None of it is funny, possibly because every gag that Carrey attempts is set up by an extra beat: I'm not sure if it's Reed's direction or Carrey's timing (it's most likely a combination of both), but anything that might elicit even the tiniest giggle is set off by quotation marks. We're given plenty of time to prepare for our own laughter, the surest way to kill it off.

Watching "Yes Man" was, for me, a completely joyless experience; I just can't take pleasure in seeing Carrey fall, figuratively or literally. His particular brand of mugging and physical shtick drove some people crazy right from the start, but I used to delight in his pinpoint timing, in the effortless ballet of his rubbery limbs. Carrey is astonishing in "Dumb & Dumber," a poo-humor masterstroke. At the time, there was no one like him, and even now, there's still no one like him -- but his distinctiveness no longer matters. With "Yes Man," Carrey has bled the well dry, doing everything he knows how to do, over and over again, just to prove that he still knows how to do it. It's exhilarating to see brilliance in a comic; but by the time you start smelling it, the game is over.

Movie review: "The Day the Earth Stood Still," from 1951, is considered a sci-fi classic in part because it eschewed the cheesy "invaders from Mars!" B-movie tropes of that era and didn't have a lot of action -- its focus was its ideas. The new remake, predictably, has washed out most of those ideas, but there still isn't much action. Which is pretty strange -- the one thing Hollywood can usually be counted on to do when remaking old films, especially when dumbing them down, is to boost their action quotient, and these guys have failed to do even that.

The new screenplay, by David Scarpa ("The Last Castle"), bears only a superficial resemblance to the original, with a few details included as a nod to the fans. The story concerns Helen Benson (Jennifer Connelly), a Princeton astrobiology professor who is summoned -- more accurately abducted -- by the U.S. government, along with experts in several other fields, when an unidentified flying object is discovered to be hurtling toward Earth. It turns out to be a spaceship, which lands in Central Park and whose occupants are Klaatu (Keanu Reeves), a human-looking extra-terrestrial, and his 35-foot robot bodyguard.

Klaatu, having been shot upon landing his UFO in Manhattan (New York parking enforcement is hardcore), is taken into custody by the military and questioned by Secretary of Defense Regina Jackson (Kathy Bates), who naturally wants to know what he's doing here and why he brought that giant robot with him. People who travel with giant robots are seldom to be trusted. Klaatu says he has a message, but he'll only deliver it to all the nations of the world at once, not just one measly leader of one measly country. He also urges his captors to let him go.

He's on the loose soon enough, don't you worry -- aided by Helen Benson, who believes he means us no harm, and by Helen's stepson, Jacob (Jaden Smith), who is much more skeptical. "They didn't come here to hurt us!" Helen tells him. He replies, "We should kill them anyway, just to be sure." I believe that's as subtle as the film gets in its commentary on international diplomacy.

It's even more heavy-handed in other areas. Those ideas that the original film had, the ones that aren't really present in the remake? They've been replaced by a generic "save the Earth" message that's so hollow and mishandled it would embarrass even Greenpeace.

In the acting department, not much is required of Connelly other than looking awestruck and worried, and she handles that with the usual aplomb, while young Jaden Smith shows off the sassy attitude he picked up from his Fresh Prince father, who knows a thing or two about chasing aliens himself. Good actors like John Cleese, Kyle Chandler, Robert Knepper, Jon Hamm, and James Hong are used for a few scenes apiece as scientists, colonels, and other alien-invasion-movie stock characters, then set aside. Meanwhile, as Klaatu, Keanu Reeves uses the fact that his character is an alien as an excuse to be even more wooden than usual, if such a thing is possible. He's not inscrutable. He's boring.

The first half of the film feels like it's building to something, creating tension for an inevitable clash, and director Scott Derrickson ("The Exorcism of Emily Rose") finds suspense in the scenes involving the military's interaction with the giant robot. The disappointment is when that clash never really comes, or at least not in great measure. The film builds to nothing, in other words -- very little action, very few ideas, very little to recommend it. To paraphrase the original, klaatu barada nothankyou.

Slumdog Millionaire is a 2008 drama film directed by Danny Boyle and written by Simon Beaufoy. It is based on the book Q and A written by Indian author and diplomat Vikas Swarup. Loveleen Tandan began as the film's casting director but was appointed by Boyle as a "co-director".

The film, shot and set in India, follows a young man from the slums of Mumbai who appears on a game show and exceeds people's expectations, raising the suspicions of the game show host and law enforcement.

Following screenings at the Telluride Film Festival and the Toronto International Film Festival, Slumdog Millionaire had a limited release on 12 November 2008 to critical acclaim and awards success.

Movie review:

Most times when I read about a movie with a lot of hype surrounding it, I find more often than not, the movie never actually lives up to the accolades it receives. "Slumdog Millionaire" is a movie that received such hype. I believe, as I write this review, it has been nominated for best picture by 11 of 20 critics associations. It has already received a Golden Globe nomination for Best Picture in the Drama category. It most certainly will be nominated for an Oscar for Best Picture. "Slumdog Millionaire" has all the ingredients it requires to be a bit of a letdown, based on my past history of movie viewing. Well, this holiday season I finally got around to seeing "Slumdog" and I just want to assure everyone that this movie is as good, if not better than you have heard. Chances are that it will be adding the Empire Movies Best Picture of the Year to the above accolades sometime in the next couple of weeks.

"Slumdog Millionaire" is the story of a young man from the slums of India who rises from poverty to become a contestant on the game show "Who Wants To Be A Millionaire". When Jamal answers every question correctly and is on the verge of winning the grand prize, the show takes a 24-hour break and Jamal is arrested and tortured because it is suspected he is cheating. The movie then takes us through the heartbreaking and often horrible life of Jamal and his brother Salim as they grow up parentless, homeless and without any real direction in life. As he explains to the police how he managed to answer the questions presented to him on "Millionaire", each question that was presented to Jamal on the game show triggers a flashback that involves Jamal, Salim and some horrible event that happened in their lives. Along the way, we learn of a girl named Latika with whom Jamal fell deeply in love during his childhood. Right up to his appearance on "Millionaire", that love has not wavered and we learn that winning money on the game show is not his real reason for even being there.

"Slumdog Millionaire" is basically a mix of a rags-to-riches story with an unconventional love story thrown into the mix. Most North American audiences are probably not used to seeing a love story that doesn't take place in New York or Chicago and doesn't involve Tom Hanks, Meg Ryan, Jennifer Aniston or Vince Vaughn. "Slumdog" takes us to the worst parts of India and features the worst people we could possibly meet and some of the worst situations we could possibly imagine. Is there anything more horrific than seeing children tortured? If there is, I don't want to know about it. But out of all this doom and gloom, there rises one young gentleman who manages to find his way onto the most popular show on television and uses this opportunity to profess his unfailing love for the girl of his dreams. It might not be the most realistic story. In fact, it surely has all the makings of your typical fairy tale. But it's damn entertaining nonetheless. Without a doubt, "Slumdog Millionaire" is one of the best, most absorbing and most enchanting movies to hit the theatres in 2008.

Ghajini (Hindi: ग़ज़नी, Urdu: غجني), is a 2008 Bollywood film directed by A. R. Murugadoss and produced under the Geetha Arts banner by Allu Aravind. The film was a remake of its Tamil namesake, Ghajini, which was also directed by Muragadoss. The original film was adapted from critically acclaimed Hollywood psychological thriller Memento, directed by Christopher Nolan. It starred Aamir Khan and Hindi débutant Asin Thottumkal as the lead pair with Jiah Khan, Pradeep Rawat and Riyaz Khan essaying supporting roles.

The film is a romantic action thriller that explores the life of a once-rich businessman who suffers from anterograde amnesia following a violent encounter. With the aid of Polaroid images and permanent tattoos on his torso, the businessman single-handedly tries to avenge the murder of his vivacious model girlfriend, Kalpana, who was killed shortly before he was also attacked leading to his diagnosis of amnesia.

Review: Aamir Khan takes great pains to promote his movies, whether he is the producer, director or even an actor. I don't know the financial stake he has in A R Murugadoss' GHAJINI, but the way he has gone about promoting the movie, it appears as if it's his production or direction. But then, he is Aamir the perfect perfectionist. So it would be in line to first highlight the technical flaws in the screenplay, which leaves you asking many questions

Like for instance, why is the death of the police officer, tracking down Aamir who is on a killing spree, not investigated?

Also, he (the police officer) is locked up in Aamir's house for at least a day if not more, why did no one in the force miss him?

Also, with the help of just one bus ticket, after the first killing, how come the said police officer 'zeroes in' quicker than the Scotland Yard on the right conductor of the BEST bus, who even knows where Aamir boards the bus from?

Also, what happens to the chaddi advertisement, Aamir (Sanjay) agrees to do for Asin (Kalpana). Now here is the Chairman of Air Voice, a mobile company, has not anyone seen him in the ad? Moreover, Asin is blissfully unaware of his 'super rich' status even though she claims to be his girlfriend. When he goes for the shoot, the film breaks into a song in Namibia, with the much-talked about six looks of Aamir. Was it a dream sequence, or were the audience dreaming?

And how come Jiah Khan, who plays a medical student, easily comes upon Aamir's medical file, wherein, the movie introduces Aamir and his medical problem - that of 'Short Term Memory Loss'. More importantly, the doctor taking the class knows that Aamir's is also a police case, so how come when he is arrested trying to kill Jiah, the police have no records about him.

Also, when Jiah Khan is trying to figure out what happened after June 2006 to Aamir, she goes to an archive that stores newspapers when all she had to do is 'Google' the names Sanjay and Kalpana!!

Finally, when RAB NE BANA DE JODI released two weeks ago, the ushers and staff at Big Cinemas, Wadala, sported the GHAJINI haircut, like many from other multiplexes. The least they could have done, or Aamir could have looked into, was to see that the look was maintained at the time of release as well and all through the week. Their hair has grown and the trademark lines on the scalp have been buried!

I'm sure Aamir would like to look into these flaws, or again, knowing the perfectionist that he is, he is aware and since this is a typical masala Bollywood film, he has let it be.

However, having highlighted these 'Short-Term Flaw' I must admit that the movie is in line with Hollywood revenge films. The action is slick, the fight sequences powerful, almost giving you a Jean Claude Van Damme impact. Full marks to Aamir for working on his physique to get the desired effect to put in that extra power into his role of a killing machine. He is simply marvelous when he bares his torso. His fight scenes are'up there' and his overall performance, well it would suffice to say that only a perfectionist would come up with a zinger! Asin who is already a rage down south, and who is also part of the hit Tamil version, is good. But there is something lacking in her skill. I mean she does not exactly go out there and 'attack' each scene. But she does endear in some scenes.

GHAJINI is a complete entertainer; it has action, romance, comedy, suspense and revenge, the age-old Bollywood formula. And Murugadoss has packaged it to meet the needs of the time and elevated it to a slick status, making use of the advancement in technology that was not afforded to revenge films of the 80s or 90s. He also comes in with the added advantage of having directed the hit Tamil film by the same name, which was a remake of Christopher Nolan's 2000 flick, MEMENTO.

The movie is about Aamir who is out to avenge his grilfriend's death. Aamir is a rich businessman, who 'accidentally' falls in love with Asin, a struggling model. During the course of their courtship, Aamir proposes to Asin and she agrees not knowing that he is who he is. In the meanwhile, Asin loves to help out the needy and one such exercise of her proves fatal. She rescues 25 girls who are being taken to Goa. GHAJINI, the man behind the flesh trade is not amused. He enters her house with his goons and does away with her, even as Aamir enters at the same time, to tell her who he actually is. He is hit on the head and hence the brain disorder when he cannot remember things for more than 15 minutes.

The film clocks three hours and the audience, who love typical Bollywood films, and are starving for the same, loved every minute of it. If violence revenge and a little bit of romance is what you like, GHAJINI is what you will love.

In the first few days, this film will break box-office records for the year.

Review: When you carry the baggage of super-successful films like DHOOM and DHOOM 2, the expectations from your subsequent outing is bound to be gargantuan. Unfortunately, KIDNAP falls short of expectations. You expect a seven course meal, but you're served mere crumbs.

Let's introspect. Where does it falter? The boy versus man concept holds tremendous scope and writer Shibani Bathija could've come up with an enthralling revenge drama. But KIDNAP fumbles, stumbles and falls on its face. The cat-n-mouse game is hardly enticing and that is its biggest drawback.

KIDNAP comes close to ZINDA in terms of plotline. There're similarities between the two films. But KIDNAP isn't as dark and gruesome as ZINDA. Also, KIDNAP loses focus after a promising start.

The hallmark of any revenge fare is the suspense quotient. In this case, there's a motive behind what Imran does. And money is definitely not the motive here. So far, so good. But the purpose of kidnapping the billionaire's only daughter as also the chain of events that lead to the culmination is such a put-off. Things keep deteriorating as they reach the finale.

The culprit? Obviously, the writer of this lifeless, unexciting and tedious drama. Shibani seems to think that the audience is pea-brained.

Silver lining or just dark clouds? Imran Khan's splendid act acts as a soothing balm, but if the pudding is tasteless, no amount of dressing can salvage the situation, right?

When Dr. Mallika [Vidya Malvade] asks her daughter Sonia [Minissha Lamba] what she wants for her 18th birthday, Sonia tells her she wants to meet her dad, Vikrant Raina [Sanjay Dutt]. The mother and father of this kid have separated, we're explained at the very outset. After a spat between the mother and daughter, Sonia walks off in a huff and doesn't return.

Mallika panics when she gets a call from a stranger that he has kidnapped Sonia. The kidnapper, Kabir [Imran Khan], has only one demand -- he will negotiate with nobody but Sonia's father, Vikrant.

Reluctantly Mallika brings Vikrant back into their lives to save Sonia. But Vikrant chokes at the thought of taking orders from a criminal. But Kabir holds the trump card -- he holds Sonia -- and Vikrant knows he has no option but to toe the line.

Kabir tells him they are going to play a game -- just the two of them. Vikrant has to play by the rules set by Kabir and he has to play alone. He has to play to save his daughter. If he even utters the words 'Hello Police', it will be Bye Bye for Sonia!

Because his daughter's life is at stake, a reluctant Vikrant agrees to obey Kabir's orders...

Never judge a book by its cover. This adage suits KIDNAP to the T. One look at its promos and you know what the story is, but the screenplay is so amateurish, even lifeless at times, that you scream, no, no, no, no, no!

Gadhvi and Shibani open the cards at the very outset. The sketches at the very beginning as also Minissha's kidnap within 10 minutes of the start compels you to think that the follow up should be equally exhilarating. But things start going wrong from this part onwards.

Imran's clues for Sanju, the first in a train and later at an engagement ceremony, make no sense. Later, Sanju and Vidya Malvade's entry in the jail is bizarre. This part takes you back to the cinema of 1970s and 1980s, when nonsense dominated. Later, when Sanju refuses to take Imran's call, Imran lands up at his house. Which kidnapper, in his right senses, would ever do that? Even the flashback -- Imran's childhood portions -- are just not impactful. Ditto for the climax. The shootout at the New Year party is ridiculous. Seriously, the writing is pathetic!

Sanjay Gadhvi is letdown by a script that easily ranks amongst the worst of 2008. Pritam's music is another sore point. Barring the 'Mit Jaaye' track, the remaining songs are lacklustre. Bobby Singh's camerawork is first-rate.

KIDNAP belongs to Imran Khan. Watch this youngster take giant strides and you know that he has arrived. He carries the cold look effortlessly. Sanjay Dutt looks disinterested, as if he is about to break into a yawn. Minissha Lamba is miscast. She doesn't look like a 17-year-old in the first place. Also, the generous dose of skin show doesn't gel with someone who's held captive. Vidya Malvade is efficient. Reema Lagoo is a mere prop. Rahul Dev's character looks forced.

On the whole, KIDNAP fails to grip you and that is its biggest flaw. At the box-office, KIDNAP being teen sensation Imran Khan's immediate release after the blockbuster hit JAANE TU... YA JAANE NA would ensure a strong opening weekend, but the poor merits are sure to take a toll once the initial euphoria subsides. Disappointing!

Review: What's wrong? Goldie Behl and his writers can't decide if DRONA is a superhero film or fantasy. Although the makers have been maintaining all along that it's not about a superhero, the fact is, it is. In DRONA, the protagonist does everything that a superhero does. However, the lead character would only look more powerful if the anti-hero is equally authoritative. Surprisingly, the negative force here [Kay Kay Menon] is more of a buffoon than a villain.
DRONA is a big film in all respects -- big stars, big canvas, big expenditure on SFX, big ad spend, big expectations. Sadly, it's a big, big, big letdown as well.

Fantasy/adventure films are a rarity in Bollywood. Actually, you want to laud Goldie Behl for being courageous, for venturing into a lane that's rarely visited by dream merchants here. But the screenplay is a complete mess. In fact, if at all there would be Razzies in Bollywood, the three writers of DRONA -- Jaydeep Sarkar, Rohini Killough and Goldie Behl -- should be nominated proto for coming up with a sloppy and slipshod screenplay.

What saddens your heart is the fact that the Lullas of Eros and Shrishti Arya, the producers of DRONA, have spared no efforts in giving DRONA a spectacular look. The vision is perfect, but how about narrating an absorbing and attention-grabbing story? You remember DRONA for its striking visuals, not storyline. It's like embellishing priceless and precious jewels on a mannequin.

More minusses! Dhruv Ghanekar's music is a big yawn. The tunes are listless and the placement of songs is equally jarring. Also, the length is a problem. You wouldn't mind a 3-hour film even today, provided it has the power to keep you glued to the screen. In this case, the 2 + hours seem never-ending. The film goes on and on and after a point, you actually want to scream, 'Enough!'.

In a nutshell, DRONA disappoints and how!

Little Aditya has never known love. Brought up by a foster family, all he knows is taunts and humiliations. Aditya [Abhishek Bachchan] grows up. Enter an evil sorcerer Riz Raizada [Kay Kay Menon], a descendant of the Asuras. He is desperate for a precious secret -- the amrit. But to lay his hands on the amrit, he will have to defeat Drona. Problem is he doesn't know who Drona is.

One fateful day, Aditya and Riz come face to face. Riz notices the kada that Aditya is wearing and recognizes him as Drona. Riz's men chase him, but he's saved by Sonia [Priyanka Chopra], who makes Aditya realize his true identity.

Sonia takes Aditya to his birthplace, to his mother, Queen Jayati Devi [Jaya Bachchan]. Aditya gets to know his roots, but Riz and his army catch up with him. Thus begins Drona's journey...

Given the fact that DRONA rests on a thin plot, there's not much that director Goldie Behl can do to salvage the show. Yet, Goldie has executed two sequences with style. In fact, these two sequences stand out like an oasis in a desert. The first, when Kay Kay turns Jaya Bachchan into a statue. The second, the train sequence. Awe-inspiring sequences!

DRONA is also high on VFX and a couple of sequences are well implemented. Note the petal storm towards the latter part and also the one when Kay Kay drags Priyanka into his yacht. Sameer Arya's cinematography is, quite surprisingly, inconsistent this time. The lighting is too dark at places. The production design [Tania R. Behl] is innovative.

Jaya Bachchan is grace personified. The only regret is, she gets less footage. Abhishek does very well. He plays his part most convincingly. Priyanka's introduction is fantastic, but her 'Babuji kehte hain' dialogue gets on your nerves after a point. Kay Kay fails to impress. Navneet Nishan hams.

On the whole, DRONA lacks soul. At the box-office, the publicity blitzkrieg might ensure good returns in its opening 4-day weekend, but the cracks should start appearing sooner than expected, since the film fails to keep you hooked. Its fall is imminent!

Twilight is a film fueled by online fan fervor as fans of Stephenie Meyer's best-selling teen-vampire franchise took to the Internet to talk about the upcoming film adaptation. The media was late to catch on to the obsession, but once they did Twilight was all anyone could talk about due to the short-term attention boost it br ought to any outlet willing to dedicate space to the story. Shopping mall riots, online insanity and crying 14-year-olds denied access to my screening of the film all come with the territory. The only question is: Is it worth it?

Regardless of quality Twi-hards, as the obsessed fan base has come to be known, will enjoy this film no matter what. It's their favorite characters brought to life on the big screen and that alone is enough for them. Where the film goes wrong they can just fill in th

blanks. Will that stop them from recognizing the film really isn't all that good? I don't think so, it just won't matter. Because, the fact is, Twilight is not a good movie. It assumes too many in the audience have read the book of which the film is based, and as a result will leave the u

ninitiated scratching their heads with boredom. To that effect, it will have the same impact on the people that have read the book but don't have a crush on the film's male lead, Robert Pattinson playing Edward Cullen, the embodiment of the perfect man. Edward's only flaw is that he is a vampire, but if I am reading the metaphor correctly this is actually a good thing because every girl wants an overprotective boyfriend that only wants to suck the life out of you. As long as he is "beautiful" and shimmers in the sun like white diamonds the rest doesn't matter.

The adjective laden descriptions of Edward are not as heavy handed and sappy as they are in Meyer's novel, but his early inability to cope with being in the presence of Isa

bella "Bella" Swan (Kristen Stewart) is downright laughable, just ask the audience I saw the film with as they were laughing nearly 50% of the time as Edward's face twists and contorts into looks of extreme constipation and clenched fists as Bella enters the room. Long staring matches between villains and friends become old hat and the film dissolves into something of an inside joke that only the tr

uly obsessed seem in on.

Ultimately the story of Bella Swan as she moves from Phoenix, Arizona to the small town of Forks, Washington mirrors the book almost too well as much of Meyer's writing is dedicated to lust filled longing glances as Bella, the human prey, is drawn to Edward as much as he is drawn to her. Her motives, instead of being filled with lust as they were on the page, now seem to be choices made out of pure stupidity an

d naiveté. This is where the film relies on the source material far too much as those that have read the story of Edward and Bella already know the relationship's motivations and will see through the onscreen melodrama, but those unaware folk will be left in the dark.

Pattinson and Stewart aren't a horrible match in this picture, but both had very hard roles to pull off due to the film's dedication to the amateurish dialogue lifted from the novel. No one could have pulled off such sappy and mundane discussions, but it does im

prove as the film moves forward and each become more comfortable as their characters, but only to the point the dialogue becomes a bit more - "real?"

The best performances come from the supporting cast, primarily Bella's father, Charlie, played by Billy Burke. Charlie, along with a few of Bella's human friends at sc

hool are the only actors with believable roles. None of the actors playing the vampires seem comfortable in their character's skin, except perhaps, Rachelle Lefevre (one of the baddie vamps) whose role is so limited giving her any kind of credit is really a stretch.

The special effects are extremely weak and have the feeling of a made-for-TV movie and the direction of Catherine Hardwicke (Thirteen) feels as if it is done by a fangirl just as in love with the characters as the target audience. Long tracking shots and 36

0-degree camera pans focusing on ineffectual scenes of nothingness do zero for an audience just waiting for something to happen. It's impossible to project the emotional status offered up in Meyer's novels on film without something to keep the audience watching. Fans of the book may enjoy nearly two hours of Edward gazing, but those unfamiliar with the original story will just be left yawning.

Twilight leaves itself open for the subsequent sequels and should the first film live up to

early box-office expectations there is no doubt the sequels will be made and considering the lead-in story is now out of the way and Summit Entertainment realizes the value in the franchise I expect the further adventures of Edward and Bella will be geared toward a much wider audience and more than five weeks will be spent on the script, as was the case this time. For what it's worth, fans of the books will love this movie, but may not go back for as many repeat viewings as they originally intended. For the rest of us we will have to grin and bear it, hoping future chapters will be more compelling.

Changeling is a 2008 American period thriller directed by Clint Eastwood and written by J. Michael Straczynski. The film begins in 1928 Los Angeles and tells the true story of a woman who recognizes that the boy returned to her after a kidnapping is not her son. After confronting the city authorities, she is vilified as an unfit mother and branded delusional. The events were related to the Wineville Chicken Coop Murders, an infamous kidnapping and murder case that was uncovered in 1928. Changeling explores themes such as disempowerment of women, corruption in political hierarchies, and the impact that violent crime has on communities. The film was made by Imagine Entertainment and Malpaso Productions for Universal Pictures. Ron Howard was originally slated to direct, but scheduling conflicts and Universal's desire to fast track the project led to his replacement by Eastwood. Howard and Imagine partner Brian Grazer remained as producers, alongside Malpaso's Robert Lorenz and Eastwood.

After being tipped off to the real life case by a contact at Los Angeles City Hall, Straczynski, a veteran television writer and producer, spent a year researching it through archived city records. He wrote the script in eleven days. The shooting script was not changed from Straczynski's first draft, and was his first produced film screenplay. He attempted to stick closely to the facts of the case, and drew 95% of the script from articles, testimony, transcripts and correspondence from the period. Straczynski placed newspaper clippings into copies of the script to remind people it was a true story. Principal photography began on October 15, 2007 and was completed in November 2007. Filming took place in and around Los Angeles. Suburban areas of San Dimas, San Bernardino and Pasadena doubled for 1920s Los Angeles, and visual effects were used to supplement these exterior shots with skylines and backdrops. Filming also took place at surviving 1920s buildings, such as Los Angeles City Hall. Eastwood's noted economical directing style extended to Changeling's shoot: actors and members of the crew remarked upon the calmness of the set and the short working days.

Several high-profile actors were interested in the lead role before Angelina Jolie was cast. Eastwood cast her partly because he felt her face fit the period setting. The film also features Jeffrey Donovan, John Malkovich, Jason Butler Harner, Amy Ryan, Michael Kelly, Geoff Pierson, and Colm Feore. Most of the characters were based on their real life counterparts, while some were composites based on people and the types of people who lived in the period. Changeling premiered in competition at the 61st Cannes Film Festival on May 20, 2008 and was met with critical acclaim, prompting speculation it could win the Palme d'Or. The award ultimately went to Entre les murs ("The Class"). Changeling had its North American premiere on October 4, 2008 as the centerpiece of the 46th New York Film Festival, and was released wide in North American theaters on October 31, 2008 after a limited release that began on October 24, 2008. Review: CANNES -- For only the second time in his filmmaking career, Clint Eastwood's celebration of the loner who bucks the system, the "cowboy" who demands justice without concern for personal jeopardy, settles on a heroine. Like Hilary Swank's boxer in "Million Dollar Baby," Angelina Jolie's single mother, Christine Collins, takes every punch thrown at her and comes back fighting. Her combat is not in a boxing ring -- where fighting is supposed to take place -- but rather in a corrupt police department, psychiatric ward and the court of justice where she demands to know one thing: What happened to her son?

A true story that is as incredible as it is compelling, "Changeling" brushes away the romantic notion of a more innocent time to reveal a Los Angeles circa 1928 awash in corruption and steeped in a culture that treats women as hysterical and unreliable beings when they challenge male wisdom.

Jolie puts on a powerful emotional display as a tenacious woman who gathers strength from the forces that oppose her. She reminds us that there is nothing so fierce as a mother protecting her cub.

The combination of Jolie and Eastwood would ordinarily mean boffo boxoffice, but "Changeling" is a tricky movie to market as it touches on every parent's greatest fear -- the disappearance of a child -- and is a period film that deals with a situation unimaginable in contemporary American society. Universal's challenge is to make the film's concerns connect with an audience more interested in the kind of police corruption usually found in Scorsese films.

In March 1928, Christine Collins' nine-year-old son Walter vanishes. Five months later, the LAPD, already under the gun for other unsolved crimes, calls out the press and delivers to Christine a boy who claims to be her son but is not. To avoid embarrassment, Captain Jones (Jeffrey Donovan) demands she take the boy home on a "trial basis." When she continues to insist that the LAPD needs to find her real son, Jones does what the department always does with troublesome citizens -- he locks her up in a psycho ward.

A radio minister, Gustav Briegleb (John Malkovich), takes up her cause and challenges the police version of events. Meanwhile, another officer, Detective Ybarra (Michael Kelly), launches an investigation into a potential serial killer (Jason Butler Harner) that not only proves Christine's contention but exposes the force, its chief and the mayor to the wrath of a citizenry fed up with living in a police state.

This story, uncovered by screenwriter J. Michael Straczynski in the city's own records and newspapers, adds a forgotten chapter to the L.A. noir of "Chinatown" and "Hollywood Confidential." Christine's utter intransigence and true-seeking in the face of absolute corruption does what no newspaper in that city is willing to do -- challenge the official stories of City Hall.

Sticking fairly closely to the facts, the movie necessarily drags us through a couple of courtrooms that cause the drama to sag momentarily. But Straczynski and Eastwood are good at cutting to the chase. Seldom does a 141-minute movie feel this short.

Jolie completely shuns her movie star image to play a woman whose confidence in everything she thinks she knows is shaken to its very core. She can appear vulnerable and steadfast in the same moment. This woman has a depth she herself has never explored.

Save for another incarcerated police victim played by the fabulous Amy Ryan, most other roles tend toward righteousness or badness without too many shades in between.

The movie draws considerable strength from Eastwood's own melodic score that evokes not only a period but also the mood of a city and even a country nervously undergoing galvanic changes. The small-town feel to the street and sets, seeming oh-so-quaint to modern eyes, captures a society resistant to seeing what is really going.

So in "Changeling" Eastwood continues to probe uncomfortable subjects to depict the individual and even existential struggle to do what is right. Christine sees no other option. And in pursuing the truth, she forces a city to take a stand and demand accountably from its politicians and police. Her boy has been changed under her horror-stricken nose. But then again, so has she.

Movie Review:

Kevin Smith's "Zack and Miri Make a Porno" occupies the other end of the IQ scale. It's really dumb, even though it starts promisingly and continues, in a self-infatuated way, to consider itself quite bright. Zack and Miri, played by Seth Rogen and Elizabeth Banks, are friends since high school and roommates living not only platonically but impecuniously; the lights and water have just been turned off. To avoid going completely broke they decide to, yes, make a porn movie. And they decide to star in it, though they vow that having sex will never spoil the purity of their friendship.

That's a fine idea for the right filmmaker, and the pairing of Mr. Rogen and Ms. Banks is as promising as it is preposterous. Judd Apatow certainly pulled off a gross-wins-gorgeous romance by casting Mr. Rogen opposite Katherine Heigl in "Knocked Up." Yet Mr. Smith, the "Clerks" auteur and a specialist in slackers and losers, slathers his patented slob esthetic indiscriminately. "Star Whores," the porn movie within the movie, is predictably crude and nonsensical, but so is the movie that surrounds it. The auditions for the porn film are thuddingly unfunny. The editing throughout is primitive -- back and forth between characters in a given scene with grindingly unvaried rhythms. The script plays like a bad treatment that tries to sell itself by explaining plot points -- including the notion that the porno cast, which includes the former porn star Traci Lords, is one big happy, supportive family putting on a show in the spirit of an Andy Hardy comedy. And Seth Rogen is totally out of control. He's been marvelously funny in the past, and will be again, but get that party animal back in his cage

Movie Review:

Every Halloween means something special to me, and it has nothing to do with candy. My sweet tooth is surpassed by the joy of a new Saw releasing in the movie theaters. Call me sick, but like many horror fanatics, I line up to see it opening day in hopes that the genius that was the first Saw will be re-created. But it never happens. In fact, it’s the complete opposite. The series gets progressively worse.

Saw V sort of broke the trend this time, only because it is slightly better than the third and fourth, but worse than the second, and much inferior to the original. Whereas the third and the fourth focused more on gore, this one goes back to its roots and shows us the clever games Jigsaw creates.

If you don’t follow the series and have no intention of watching the beginning part of the series, the Jigsaw killer is not really a killer. He finds immoral people and puts them in contraptions that will kill them if they choose to let it. Otherwise, they can stop the contraption by performing some gruesome act, such as finding a key in intestines, sawing a foot off, or throwing someone in a pit full of syringes. If the person survives, they have a new outlook on life and will cherish it.

The games and contraptions are what give the series its edge. And Saw V had a good time creating different ways for people to kill themselves or others. Although incredibly gory, the opening scene was quite effective. I won’t give it away, but it’s impossible for you not to cringe, and it sets the tone for how carefully planned the games will be.

"Why won't this hat come off?"

Saw V picks up right where Saw IV left off where Jigsaw and his new protégé are attacking the cops in the city. Jigsaw is now dead and the movie follows his protégé attacking a group of people, trying to get the cops off his back, and learning how to be the new Jigsaw through a series of flashbacks.

The best part of the movie is following Jigsaw’s student's newest game, in which he traps 5 people in a room that are all somehow connected. All five of them must work together to get to the next room, but each room has a clever game causing one person to die. This part of the storyline is the most intriguing, only because there is no way to know who is going to die and how.

The movie lost its momentum since it was intercut with flashbacks to show Jigsaw teaching his new student all the tricks of the trade. Because we have seen all these games before, it fell flat and unfolded at a snail pace.

"This necklace is a little tight."

It was less of a horror movie but more of a thriller with a ton of gore. The film focuses more on the chase than the killer. Also, the Saws are pretty much known for a twist ending. But when the trailers say that “You won’t believe this ending,” I expect something respectable. With an abrupt ending, just know you will be disappointed.

As far as the acting, it’s all so-so. Tobin Bell is still creepy as ever as Jigsaw, but the new pupil, Costas Mandylor isn’t threatening. His motivation to kill is a little cliché and doesn’t really drive the rest of the movie. Julie Benz (of Dexter fame) is a surprise addition to this movie and adds some complexity to her character.

Altogether, the movie is a good Halloween view, but don’t go in expecting something amazing. I will say this: it is decent enough to wait for next year’s Saw VI.............

Review: Comedian-actor Dane Cook still hasn't managed to make me laugh out loud in a movie theater.

In "My Best Friend's Girl," though, he does something probably more important. He makes me really care about his character.

Tank (Cook) appears to be a lout to the ninth degree. He's the anti-Cupid, an emotional terrorizer of women.

When a guy gets dumped, he pays Tank to ask the girl out, gross her out verbally and physically and generally send her running back to the original boyfriend, who doesn't seem so bad anymore.

Tank meets his match with Alexis, portrayed by romantic-comedy vet Kate Hudson. My thought going in was that if Cook couldn't translate his stand-up comic success to the big screen opposite Hudson, he might never truly be a romantic-comedy movie star.

The laugh is on me, as it turns out. First-time screenwriter Jordan Cahan and veteran director Howard Deutch finally give Cook some material that's right in his sensibility wheelhouse.

Tank has the roughest edge you can imagine. He doesn't merely send women reeling in horror, he makes the mistake of falling for his best friend's girl.

Jason Biggs ("Over Her Dead Body"), is resigned now, it seems, to this kind of supportive, third-lead role. He's Dustin, Tank's friend and distant cousin who's way too eager to make Alexis his significant other the decent, good-guy way.

It should be made clear that "My Best Friend's Girl" is not light-hearted romantic comedy. Deutch ("The Whole Ten Yards") allows the script and his actors to drag the comedy below bottom-feeder, lowbrow status.

When Cook's character takes a turn the audience might not expect, though, the caustic ice begins to thaw. We realize there might be hope for at least one of the drips after all.

Add that to a quality performance by Cook ("Good Luck Chuck") and there are some things to like about this raunchy comedy with heart.

Hudson – durable as ever – is another. And Alec Baldwin, who's only in this thing for two or three scenes you may not soon forget, is another.

"My Best Friend's Girl" doesn't exactly make the smoothest exit before the end credits roll. Up until that point, though, this is a verbally poisonous comedy that rattles the sensibility cage.

Review: "Igor" is about a misunderstood hunchback and an aspiring actress, and it's easy to see why it got made in the first place: Most of the men who run Hollywood envision their world in roughly the same terms.

Screenwriter Chris McKenna - whose chief credit is the Fox series "American Dad!" - brings a classic supporting horror-movie player center stage, the way the "Shrek" movies subverted and showcased the ogre archetype. In the Kingdom of Malaria, Igors are sent to Igor School for a "Yes Masters' Degree" (I like that bit), destined for a servile, lisping, foot-dragging existence in the employ of the country's many evil scientists.

The Igor "Igor" concerns itself with is voiced by John Cusack. His venal boss, Dr. Glickenstein (John Cleese), expires while tinkering with his invention for the annual Evil Science Fair, leaving Igor to freely experiment with his own creation: a destructive force of mayhem, female division, voiced by Molly Shannon. She recalls Elsa Lancaster in "The Bride of Frankenstein," without the electro-fro.

The gag here is that "Eva" isn't evil in the least. Subjected to a "Clockwork Orange"-style brainwashing process, she is mistakenly shown a James Lipton "Inside the Actors Studio" program and comes out thinking she's an actress herself, obsessed with scene study and updating her "sense-memory journal." If this sounds rather arch, well, a lot of "Igor" certainly is that. You'll surely never see, or hear, a more menacing rendition of the "Annie" anthem "Tomorrow" than the one sung by the newly evil-ized Eva as she batters the competition at the climactic Evil Science Fair.

I don't like that scene much: It's just off-putting. More fun for me, as well as for my preteen son John and his pal Liam, is the running gag with Igor's associate, the suicidal rabbit Scamper. With an uneven and overstuffed script you appreciate the corner-of-the-mouth comments as delivered by Steve Buscemi. The boys' favorite bit was one of the simplest: "May I suggest that you look behind you!?!" Scamper thunders, after Eva's gone missing. Igor looks. Nothing there. "It was just a suggestion," he says. The visual universe of "Igor" is pretty grim, full of rusty maroon tones and belching smoke and pop decadence. Director Tony Leondis and his chief art director, Olivier Besson, are trying to show us there's more than one way to evoke moods and textures made famous by Tim Burton. Even with various script doctors, "Igor" isn't particularly funny, and having all those Louis Prima tunes on the soundtrack seems completely at odds with composer Patrick Doyle's moody, sardonic orchestral commentary. But my kid went with it, and I had a fairly good time with it, as I waited patiently for the reappearance of a marble-mouthed peasant tart, Mittel-European division, voiced by Jennifer Coolidge. Half the time her line readings are hilarious, and it's impossible to know, in any rational sense, why. That's my kind of voice artist.

Cutting to the chase: If you like the Coen Brothers previous works of No Country for Old Men,O Brother Where Art Thou? than you will find this to be a along the same lines. If you don’t it may make you laugh as it did me. But it also will surprise you as it is not at all what the trailers have shown it to be. or even

The story revolves around a disk containing the memoirs of a CIA agent that ends up in the hands of two everyday gym employees who attempt to sell it. One would think this could have some very funny twists and turns but the humor in this one was very dry and almost awkward at times.

The Coen’s have brought complex characters to the screen in the least warming way possible. If it weren’t for Brad Pitt’s crazy chararcter the film would be very drab and lacking in many places. The way in which the chararcters are introduced was very abrupt and not well thought out.

Brad Pitt plays Chad, a gym trainer at a Har Bodies chain. The way in which he goes throughout the movie is something to watch. He made the movie if you ask me.

Harry (George Clooney), an OCD womanizer, is a character you begin to route for towards the end of the film. Even though it seems he sleeps with anyone he can get his hands on, he grows on you. Creator of story after story, and lie after lie, you begin to like this guy.

Osborne Cox, played by the ever talented John Malkovich, has to be the most screwed up chararcter on screen, and in this movie that is saying a lot! Cox recently quit his post at the CIA after his boss wanted to reassign him due to having a drinking problem.

While the film had its funny parts, I must of missed the point of the film throughout. Pitt was the savior of the movie in my eyes. While each actor put in a great performance, the film was subpar as a comedy and on par as a dramedy. With that said I would also watch out for the very random violent parts of the film. In Coen style, the blood, is over the top everytime its called for.

The soundtrack on this movie was great if you ask me. It is not something that is something that I notice in a film. Over all I would recommend this to anyone who enjoys Coen Brothers films. Beside that I would probably call this a rental.

Review:

In a shocking change of pace for Tyler Perry, "The Family That Preys" is, get this, a southern-fried melodrama, frosted with overbearing performances, low-budget production polish, and obscene displays of artistic and moral ineptness. It's nice see that Perry, in his fifth directorial effort, has decided to test himself with deeply challenging material, rising above his past transgressions, at last offering the screen a tightly wound story that speaks universal truths about the state of the human condition.

All kidding aside: "Preys" stinks.

Lifelong friends, Alice Pratt (Alfre Woodard) and Charlotte Cartwright (Kathy Bates) have enjoyed watching their children grow and their businesses flourish. When Charlotte's shifty son William (Cole Hauser) begins an extramarital affair with Alice's daughter Andrea (Sanaa Lathan), the secret is impossible to cover, tearing up both families as the lies and manipulation start to pile up. With Charlotte and Alice trying to keep some sense of order, Andrea's clueless husband, Chris (Rockmond Dunbar), still hopes to solicit seed money for his construction business dreams from William, leaving Andrea's sister Pam (Taraji P. Henson) and her husband Ben (Tyler Perry) at a loss for words, observing the madness from the comfort of their stable marriage.

Unlike the rest of the Tyler Perry catalog, "Preys" is engineered to win over a large, crossover audience for the Georgian mogul. Not that the film doesn't have huge, wet Perry stamps all over it, but there's a new angle to "Preys" that Perry hasn't sampled before: the Caucasian experience.

Previous Perry pictures traditionally looked upon white people as comedic foils who were quick with a racist remark or nugget of high-society disgust. "Preys" gives us Charlotte, who doesn't approach her friendship with Alice through skin color, but through honest admiration and companionship. It's a superb change of pace for Perry, who resists nearly any opportunity to inject racial animosity into the picture. However, it's the last moment of invention the film will enjoy.

"Preys" is a soap opera in the most unashamed sense, and while this aesthetic has made Perry heaps of coin, his personal screen touch remains some of the worst overall filmmaking around. The new feature is perhaps even more melodramatic than anything that's come before, taking the Andrea/William affair and using it as the inspiration for the cast to arch their eyebrows to assured cramp, flare nostrils in unintentional comedic fury, and bounce impassioned lines of dialogue off each other with medicine ball grace. It's equal parts hilarious and aggravating, with Perry showing little shame as he works the characters into pants-wetting hysteria.

For "Preys," the action is actually split into two parts: the sticky infidelity web and Alice and Charlotte's you-go-girl road trip, where the two ladies take off in a vintage car and tour the southwest ("like Oprah and Gayle!"). The travelogue is Perry's weakest idea, taking the ladies on a booze-laden tour of bars and natural wonders, with the merriment jumping from male strip clubs all the way to blunt professions of early-onset Alzheimer's. Yes, I just wrote that. It wouldn't be Perry if the story didn't contain shameless, whiplash-inducing turns of pity that emerge from out of nowhere, leaving the audience in a complete lurch with little dramatic foundation to fall back on. Plus the road trip segment introduces what I would consider a true torture device: Kathy Bates in overact mode. Gulp.

The infidelity side of the "Preys" script is given far more attention, but in all the wrong ways. Here, the performances are a wreck, with Hauser emitting the sexual appeal of a cold sore as he struts around like a mannequin, refusing to move a facial muscle (a Hauser specialty). "Preys" also has Chris to kick around, and the dim-witted character is used solely as the film's punching bag, employed here to suffer the most humiliation and to carry out another Perry commandment: the justified moment of domestic abuse.

By having Chris punch Andrea (cue audience cheer) to release his cuckold frustrations, Perry crosses the line, endorsing violence on a level he's only flirted with before. It's sickening and completely irresponsible. In a film stuffed with bibles, baptisms, and gospels, to watch the movie celebrate spousal abuse is an unthinkable step even for Perry, who is more than willing to profit from his bottom-feeding template of pandering no matter how much it could influence his target demographic.

With enough double-crosses and tragic ends to make "Days of Our Lives" wince, "The Family That Preys" clearly demonstrates that even when Perry desires to climb out of his own genre, he lacks the skills and the patience to truly test himself. Instead, it's the same old dance, only now it involves slapping around women.

Review:

I think it's fair to say that Al Pacino and Robert De Niro don't exactly disappear into character in "Righteous Kill."

It's not that you don't buy them as hard-boiled New York cops - of course you do. I can't think of anyone who could do it better.

But every scene is also alive with an awareness that the audience is meant to enjoy this legends-collide screen partnership as much as they obviously do, and they're happy to blur the line between actor and character.

The movie, in fact, gets a big laugh when a precinct boss (Brian Dennehy) asks the two men if they plan to retire.

They answer with a happy, obscene "no," a moment that not only defines their characters, but works as a reassuring, sentimental nod to loyal fans.

Pacino and De Niro aren't going anywhere, and certainly not gently.

That said, you'll also notice that "Righteous Kill" isn't asking either actor to stretch. World-weary, rule-bending cop? I think they can handle it. And the story is hackneyed - veteran detectives on the trail of a serial killer who leaves rhyming poetry at the scene of his grisly crimes.

Aside from the novelty of two acting legends working together, "Righteous Kill" plays like a pumped-up episode of "Law and Order," with the lurid benefits of the "R" rating.

De Niro accrues most of them. He's romantically paired with the gorgeous and much younger Carla Gugino, playing a CSI detective who's aroused by violence and by her lover's Dirty Harry reputation. They retire from grisly crime scenes to have sweaty, urgent encounters - kudos to cinematographer Denis Lenoir for finding a way to photograph these scenes in such a way as to feature Gugino and obscure De Niro.

This is also played for laughs, up to a point. The older man's fatigue at meeting the needs of a younger woman are fodder for crude jokes.

Gradually, though, the movie gets darker and asks to be taken more seriously (the CSI gal's taste for rough sex leads to a truly awful scene), and here's where it runs into problems.

"Righteous Kill" tries to build suspense around the idea that one of the detectives emerges as a suspect in the killings - director Jon Avnet even uses an apparent confession as a framing device, tipping us in the early moments to the culprit's supposed identity (a flashy device that's overused and disrupts the flow of the movie).

If we assume this is a misdirection, it's not very difficult to determine where the movie is really going, especially if you pause to chew on the movie's labored chess metaphors.

Why, you wonder, would titans like De Niro and Pacino opt to participate in such a pulpy, throwaway "B" movie? For one thing, they're obviously having fun. And if you consider the ending of "Righteous Kill" in the context of their overall careers, you see there's a ghoulish symmetry to it.

When, and if, they ever retire, it's something they can laugh about.

Review: Vikram Bhatt visits the horror genre again, after RAAZ. Also, like RAAZ, 1920 talks of love, lust and paranormal forces. But unlike RAAZ, 1920 is set in the bygone era and that makes RAAZ and 1920 as diverse as chalk and cheese.

After a series of watchable and avoidable fares, Vikram Bhatt is back with a vengeance in his latest endeavour. It may not be the most eerie experience, but it has its share of terrifying moments that one expects from a film that talks of supernatural forces. The best thing about 1920 is that the culmination to the story is most compelling, which is so vital for a horror-mystery.

Any hiccups? The narrative slows down at regular intervals and that robs the film of its shine. Besides, the flashback -- the reason why the spirit seeks revenge -- could've been more impactful.

All said and done, the pros easily outweigh the cons here. Most importantly, 1920 delivers what it promises: Eerie and scary moments aplenty!

The year is 1920 and the house isolated in the wilderness has a secret. It is waiting for the curse to come true. For years, everyone who has tried to pull it down has died of mysterious circumstances.

Arjun [Rajneesh Duggal] and his wife [Adah Sharma] move into the house. He has been given the task of pulling it down and making a hotel there. The house has been waiting for them. Strange and inexplicable events start taking place…

The period look and the castle [located in Yorkshire in actuality], which is an integral part of the story, give the film a distinctive texture. From the writing point of view [story: Vikram Bhatt; screenplay: Vikram Bhatt, Dhiraj Ratan], the love story is well structured and the obstacles the couple face are well depicted.

But the film actually gallops when the spirit takes over the girl's body. Thereafter, incident after incident catches you unaware. Note the sequence at the nursing home, when the spirit talks to the doctor. Or recall the spirit's warning to the priest. The finale -- when Rajneesh chants Hanuman Chalisa -- is another highpoint.

Without doubt, 1920 is amongst Vikram Bhatt's finest works. In fact, it's after a really long gap that Bhatt seems to be in complete command. Pravin Bhatt's camera captures the mood splendidly. The beauty of the castle has been captured very well by the DOP. Adnan Sami's music strikes a chord. 'Bichua' [singer: Shubha Mudgal; filmed on Rakhi Sawant] caters to the masses, while 'Tujhe Main Pyaar Karu' [Kailash Kher] and 'Vaada' [Pt. Jasraj] are aimed at the heart.

Both Rajneesh Duggal and Adah Sharma go through their roles confidently. Adah gets the meatier part and she takes to it like a fish takes to water. She's excellent! Rajneesh has the trappings of a fine actor and though there's slight awkwardness at places, it can be overcome with the passage of time. He has the potential. Anjori Alagh looks beautiful and leaves an impression in the second hour. Indraneel does well. Raj Zutshi [as the priest] is top notch. Vallabh Vyas [doctor] is as usual.

On the whole, 1920 is an engrossing fare that meets the expectations. It has the potential to work at plexes and single screens, metros and mini-metros, catering to all audiences. from indiafm.com

Review: This is second movie released on same day and having same topic in common. That is.. terrorism. So the movie is about some terrorist Hijacking a plane who want to get some terrorist freed up. So what is up with this movie, do it served its purpose ? And above all, was it able to entertain the people who spent money to watch this movie in multiplexes and theaters ?

As said, the plot is about a plane hijack. But looking into deep, you will found that the execution is not consistent. At first Hijackers want plane to go Dubai and later on lands into Chandigarh as its low in fuel. So terrorist were not prepared about their plan ? Anyways, here we meet our lead character Vikram Madan (Shiney Ahuja) who is now looking after maintenance of the airport here but earlier was a pilot. His license is canceled as during one such hijack attempt he violated rules and his wife was also killed in that incident.

Now, incidentally his daughter is also in same hijacked plane. As he lost his wife later, now he don't want to loose his daughter and move alone to take the responsibility to save this plane. He is supported by only one person .. a airhostess Saira(Isha Deol).

Reason is convincing enough that a person who lost his wife and now life of his daughter is on sake so he decides to move alone to take control of everything but in movie it was not convincing at all. Though director tried to show that how our Hero makes plan and goes systematic but script clearly looks too amateurish. Lots of flaws are there.

Its good to see the attempt but its disappointing. And songs are just wastage of time here in such movies. Despite of fair enough effort from Shiney, the movie fails to excite you.

There are lots of cinematic liberties taken here which just ruins it all. Esha deol do not leave any impact.

We have seen many such effort in Hollywood but if you are going to compare this one from any from later then there is no comparison. Looks like we still have to go far meanwhile enjoy flicks from bollywood.

Overall, could have been a nice package but ill treatment and lousy script is disappointment. Too much bollywood style liberties.

Review: Quality of films is growing consistently in Bollywood and some of the films are on par with Hollywood; be it technical or conceptual. A Wednesday, that is scheduled to release on 5th of September, falls in that league. The run time of the film is 1 hr 43 minutes. Neeraj Pandey's narration and screenplay glues the audience to the seat. The film has no formulaic ingredients such as songs, comedy etc. With electrifying performances from the cast, tight screenplay and unpredictable twists give the film the required boost.

Prakash Rathod (Anupam Kher) is police commissinor. One wednesday he gets an anonymous call warning of bombs planted at several places in the city and demanding release of 4 terrorists. Arif Khan (Jimmy Shergil), Jai Singh (Amir Bashar) are appointed to handle the case. Right at the moment when the terrorists are released, an unpredictable event happens. What is it and if the militants are really released should be seen on the screen.

Well! Casting has seasoned actors Anupam Kher and Naseerudhin Shah. Any thing that one talks about these two accomplished actors is less. Undoubtedly, the characters that these two handled in this film will find a place in their top films list. In fact, the way the character is moulded of Naseerudhin Shah in the film reminds of typical Morgan Freeman characters in Hollywood. Particularly in Climax, Naseerudhin's performance is mind blowing. Deepal Shah as TV reporter, seema Malik, Parthu, Veerendar Saxena and others did justice to their roles.

A while ago, Nasserudhin Shah commented that he immediately accepted this role as he did not find this kind of character in the recent years. The credits given to Neeraj Pandey by Nasserudhin Shah and Anupam Kher turn into reality on screen. Excellent script and similarly marvellous narration complimented by apt dialogs, cinematography and scintillating background score, crisp editing make this film a must watch.

Overall, with the finest actors of Indian Cinema, Immensely talented writer and director delivered a honest film.

Bangkok Dangerous is not so much a crime thriller as it is a slow-moving profile of a depressed hitman. It’s the kind of movie you might watch if you came across it surfing around at 3 a.m.
I wonder what Nicolas Cage was thinking when he made this movie, which features his droney voiceover narration and lots of close-up shots of him pondering the fact that he kills people for a living. I have to think it went something like this: I’d like to go to Thailand. Why not make a movie there and see the sights in the process?

Cage plays Joe, an anonymous, globe-trotting assassin who takes out targets precisely and succinctly, gets paid, and moves on. He has four rules and, presumably, no conscience. But he’s ready to get out of the business, and he sees an opp to do just that in Bangkok, where he’s called on to kill four people.
But as the job progresses, he makes nice with a cute, deaf-mute shop girl (Charlie Yeung) and bonds with a local boy (Shahkrit Yamnarm) hired to run his errands. Why Joe suddenly decides to get human is a mystery. We’re never really clued in as to why he picks now to get a conscience.
Anyway, there’s a lot of pensive moodiness in this movie — shots of Cage scoping out the target, sitting in his rental house, having awkward dinners with the shop girl — and not a lot of action, aside from a couple of short motorcycle stints and a goofy boat chase through a floating market.
The few scenes of proposed levity don’t really work. At least, I guess it was supposed to be funny when Cage tried spicy Thai food, and the shop girl laughed at him.
I didn’t see the original Pang Brothers film, on which this one is based, but hope to heck it was better than this one and with fewer cliches.
You know how the beginning of Tropic Thunder starts? With the parody trailers of the guys’ movies? Just take out Ben Stiller and Robert Downey, Jr., and put Nic Cage in there. That’s what I was thinking during Bangkok Dangerous. It’s a big parody of crime-thriller movies.

BABYLON A.D. is well acted, briskly paced and consistently clear: Like Neil Marshall's DOOMSADAY (2008), which was accorded an equally cursory theatrical release, it's bare-bones genre entertainment, no better or worse than it ought to be..............

Review: Pity today’s teenage audience. Their latest cinematic temptation is yet another tiresome fraternities-are-wild offering in which three high school seniors take a weekend trip to a promising college campus and have, like, a totally insane time. With its rapid-fire bombardment of one gross-out moment after the next, Deb Hagan’s “College” strains to sell itself as one crazy ride (raging parties! hot lesbian sex! bare breasts!), and chances are it won’t disappoint those looking solely for unadulterated raunch.

Photographed with a soft, slightly washed-out look better suited to a period piece, the protagonists — the overweight wisecracker (Andrew Caldwell), the pasty geek (Kevin Covais) and the sensitive bore (Drake Bell) — are subjected to a series of humiliations at the hands of a particularly nasty fraternity before turning the tables, lamely employing comparable tricks.

Oh, and somehow they manage to attract the attention of some girls who not only buy that the guys are college age but also seem really to like them — which is par for the course, because taste certainly isn’t part of this film’s equation. But it’s the eventual moralizing that makes this journey of geek empowerment feel like a seemingly endless one.

Review: It's always a bit of a chore reviewing the latest spoof movie from Jason Friedberg and Aaron Seltzer. One can only proclaim how tragically unfunny they are so many times before your words become about as predictable as the jokes that populate their films. What’s perhaps most upsetting is that they don’t even try. Movie-specific jokes are almost always derived from the trailer (as if they would no longer be topical one year later, after the writers actually saw them), while the sheer volume of look-a-likes crammed into a single sequence is practically a signed confession of their laziness. So, yeah, in case you were wondering, “Disaster Movie” sucks. It’s juvenile and crude, and it ranks right up there as one of the worst films of the year.

Using “Cloverfield” as its main source of inspiration, the film stars Matt Latner as Will, the leader of a group of twentysomethings who must struggle to survive when Earth becomes the target of every natural disaster imaginable. Matt is on a mission to rescue his girlfriend, Amy (Vanessa Minnillo), from certain death, but if he hopes to stop the impending doomsday first, he’ll have to return the fabled Crystal Skull to its pedestal at the Museum of Natural History. Joining him on his journey is his best friend Calvin (G. Thang), a pregnant smartass named Juney (Crista Flanagan), and an Enchanted Princess (Nicole Parker) who’s really just a drug addicted crack whore looking for her next fix.

As we’ve all come to expect from these types of films, “Disaster Movie” is loaded with more pop culture references than an episode of “Best Week Ever.” For the most part, they don’t even make sense. There are throwaway references to McLovin and Anton Chigurh (because, well, they were both in popular movies from the past year), Iron Man, Hellboy and the Incredible Hulk are all hit with plastic cows within the span of three minutes, and Carrie Bradshaw is – cue the laugh track, please – played by a dude. There’s also a “Speed Racer” joke involving Michael Jackson in the trunk with Chim-Chim, and Beowulf stops by to pick up where “Meet the Spartans” left off with its never-ending supply of gay jokes. And because that still isn’t enough material to fill its embarrassingly short 75-minute runtime, “Disaster Movie” makes an art out of running jokes into the ground. A saber-toothed Amy Winehouse doesn’t just burp in some guy's face once. She does it again, and again, and again. And because it wasn’t funny the first 13 times, she does it once more for good measure. Hey, would you look at that, we just wasted five minutes.

What’s truly incredible, however, is that Friedberg and Seltzer include references to things that don’t even deserve to be parodied, like “High School Musical,” “My Super Sweet 16,” and a commercial for some product called HeadOn. It just doesn’t make sense, especially when the film has the potential to be better. Nicole Parker, in particular, delivers a memorable performance as the too-happy-not-to-be-on-drugs Enchanted Princess, while a bit involving Alvin and the Chipmunks singing death metal will have you rolling on the ground in laughter. You see, Friedberg and Seltzer can be funny. Now, if only they could do it on a more consistent basis, they might actually make a movie that isn’t such a – sorry, but it has to be said – disaster............

Review: Is ROCK ON!! DIL CHAHTA HAI 2, one is tempted to ask. DIL CHAHTA HAI was a trendsetter when you look back, paving way for storytellers who wanted a new story to tell. ROCK ON!! is the story of four friends [Farhan Akhtar, Arjun Rampal, Purab Kohli, Luke Kenny] who put together the greatest band this country has ever seen, Magic, but never make it. Years later, fate conspires to bring them together again and set them on a journey back to where they left off... a soul-searching pilgrimage into their past.

ROCK ON!! bears some resemblance to the Hollywood film THAT THING YOU DO [Tom Hanks], but it could be a mere coincidence. Director Abhishek Kapoor sets it in the Indian milieu efficiently. Watch the bonding shatter into pieces for no fault of anyone in particular actually. It's the circumstances that play the villain here and Abhishek captures it on lens so beautifully. The fragile relationships, how piece after piece is put together and the journey to the climax… the narrative is so compelling, it makes you feel you're witnessing all of it first-hand.

Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy's music is perfect. It's completely in sync with the mood of the film. Connoisseurs of music have already showered the music with rave reviews and rightly so! Jason West's cinematography is fantastic. The screenplay and dialogues are commendable.

Every performance in the film deserves brownie points. Farhan Akhtar makes his debut as an actor and he displays rare maturity for a first-timer. Known as an accomplished director all along, Farhan will now be acknowledged as a mature actor as well. Arjun Rampal delivers his finest performance to date. Watch him emote those tough emotional moments and also as a failed person in the latter parts and you'd realize that he has only grown with the passage of time. Superb is the word!

Purab Kohli is tremendous and so is Luke Kenny. Purab has always delivered fine performances, but he's touched a new high this time. Luke is equally charged.

Prachi Desai scores in her very first feature. She has a challenging role and footage-wise too, it's substantial. Prachi brings in a lot of freshness and poise. Plus, she's a competent actor. Shahana Goswami is a talent to watch out for. Her performance is one of the most difficult ones for a newcomer and the confidence with which she carries it deserves to be lauded. Koel Purie has a brief role and she enacts it quite well.

On the whole, ROCK ON!! is an amazing experience. The highpoint is the emotional quotient, the skilful performances and the superb execution of the subject. At the box-office, this urban film holds tremendous appeal for metros and mini-metros. Business at multiplexes of Mumbai, Pune, Delhi and NCR, Kolkata and South in particular should be excellent. Very strongly recommended!

MUNNABHAI M.B.B.S. started a trend of sorts. Gangsters with a heart of gold acting as modern-day Robinhoods. Robbing the notorious rich and helping the oppressed poor.

Writer turned debutante director Sachin Yardi borrows a leaf from MUNNABHAI M.B.B.S. and presents a tale that not only talks of Robinhoods, but also makes a scathing attack at news reporting hitting an all-time low [anything for TRPs], makes digs at Ekta Kapoor and her serials, also looks at the underworld-builder-cops nexus.

The story of three losers attaining power overnight makes for interesting viewing. But the problem is, C KKOMPANY lacks consistency. The comedy is truly hilarious at places, but there’re times when you sit motionless, not reacting to the on-screen antics. If the first hour is a joyous ride, the second hour is akin to driving on a road full of potholes. The climax is also a letdown [in the mela], although the end sequence — C KKOMPANY is now a movement — was the right way to conclude the film.

All said, C KKOMPANY had the germs of being a cool entertainer, but it ends up being a one-time average watch.

C KKOMPANY is about three individuals, all living in the ‘C’ Wing of a middle class housing society: Akshay [Tusshar] is a crime reporter, Mr. Joshi [Anupam Kher] is a retired accountant trying to deal with his ungrateful son and Lambodar [Rajpal Yadav] is at loggerheads with his wife over his job. These three friends share their respective plight with one another and find solace in each other’s company.

On one occasion, they play a harmless prank to tackle their problems. One thing leads to another and before they realize, the incident becomes big news. But things don’t stop there. They put their new founded fame to good use and this in turn triggers off a series of incidents, which propel them to such heights that the three become the talk of the nation.

That Sachin Yardi has a flair for comedy was more than evident when he penned the thoroughly entertaining KYAA KOOL HAI HUM. C KKOMPANY also boasts of humour-laden sequences that keep you in splits at several points.

But keeping the humour alive from start to end is not everyone’s cup of tea. Yardi’s humour works till the beginning of the second hour, but things stagnate thereafter. Things get repetitive. There’s not much movement in the story and the comic scenes also range from enjoyable to avoidable.

Music is quite okay, but the songs — barring the Sanjay Dutt track at the outset — show up without valid situations. The Tusshar-Celina track, although well shot, comes up from nowhere. Cinematography is alright.

C KKOMPANY gets its glory because of its three protagonists. Tusshar is only climbing the ladder with every film. He’s excellent. Anupam Kher proves yet again that he’s amongst the best in the business. Rajpla Yadav is efficient too.

Mithun Chakraborty is in command after a long time. The veteran is superb. Vinay Apte and Dilip Prabhavalkar do complete justice to their respective roles. Raima Sen is pleasant. Karan Johar, Mahesh Bhatt and Ekta Kapoor’s appearances give the film that extra sheen.

On the whole, C KKOMPANY is funny in parts, not in totality. An ordinary fare...

Review: Kahani kabhi khatam nahin hoti… That's the catchline of CHAMKU. True, certain stories are timeless and ageless, they keep getting repeated year after year, with new faces obviously.

Vendetta -- one theme that's beaten to death in Bollywood. CHAMKU tackles the age-old theme of revenge, although director Kabeer Kaushik throws a twist at the outset, when a Naxalite is picked up by RAW and IB to work for them. Otherwise, CHAMKU is old wine presented in a new bottle. The only saving grace is Bobby Deol, who delivers his career-best performance in CHAMKU. But the sad part is that the script succumbs to predictability all through.

Besides, what's with a title like CHAMKU? Sure, the story is about a guy called Chandrama Singh aka Chamku, but in these fast changing times, when the multiplex audience holds the key, a title like CHAMKU will only dissuade them from buying the ticket. Also, a title like CHAMKU sends out signals that it's a comedy. It's not!

Another factor that goes against it is the violence/brutality depicted in this 2-hour film. Blood, gore, crudity and brutality is out, but Kabeer Kaushik still believes in the cinema of 1970s and seems to have given action director Tinu Verma a free hand to recreate the violence-laden atmosphere of 1970s. Pistols, guns, knives, swords, blood-soaked bodies, spare us the gore please.

To cut a long story short, there's hardly any chamak in CHAMKU.

CHAMKU depicts the journey of a male Naxalite from the interiors of Bihar, tutored under a covert government program to eliminate the anti-social elements. Chandrama Singh aka Chamku has no alternative. Kill them or we'll kill you, he's told by Kapoor [Irrfan Khan].

His life undergoes a dramatic change when he falls in love with Priyanka Chopra. He wants to lead a normal life, but is it so easy? Also, he comes face to face with his nightmarish past [Akhilendra Mishra].

A pertinent question that crosses your mind is, what did the Deols see in a script like this? The execution is fluid at places, but the written material is so predictable after a point that you lose interest as incident after incident unravels.

The first half does boast of a few interesting sequences. The transformation from a ruthless killer to a romantic is depicted beautifully. Also, a number of sequences are filmed with flourish. But the film goes downhill in the second hour, courtesy a screenplay of convenience.

Monty Sharma's music is below par. 'Aaja Milke' is the sole decent track. The item song [Rosa] looks like a hurried job. Gopal Shah's cinematography captures the various moods of the film well. Tinu Verma's action is too realistic. The blood and gore could've been tapered.

Bobby gets it right. He conveys a lot even when silent. This performance deserves all the praise. Priyanka is wasted. There's no scope for her actually. Ditto for Riteish Deshmukh and Danny Denzongpa. In fact, the two actors are hardly there in the movie. Irrfan Khan, as always, is competent. Rajpal Yadav does well as the informer. Akhilendra Mishra is supposed to act loud, which he does well. Arya Babbar gets no scope, not even a line to deliver. Ditto for Deepal Shaw.

On the whole, CHAMKU rests on an outdated plot and given the blood-gore-brutality in the film, will face an uphill task. Businesswise, it has some chances in the U.P.-Bihar region..........By Taran Adarsh

Review:

May as well be Kabuki, the way that Don Cheadle keeps his features firmly fixed in a dead-eyed sourpuss for the majority of Traitor. As Samir Horn, an African expatriate and former U.S. Special Operations officer now working, seemingly, as a bomb-crazed subversive, the actor gets to flex his "morose" muscles, barely cracking sweat or smile as he globe-hops to jihad's content. This is the new face of terrorism: sad, zombified, going-through-the-motions - so inured to the ease with which life can be taken that the thrill of the kill is a far-distant memory (pure training-day nostalgia).

Except it's not, because there's a twist or two or three, courtesy screenwriter/director Jeffrey Nachmanoff and story concoctor Steve Martin (who came up with the idea on the set of Bringing Down The House - think on that one a while), that reveals Traitor to be less of a subdued character study than a gotcha! New Yorker short story, one for the coast-dwelling intelligentsia to ponder from insulated glass-house heights. It's bullsh*t through and through from the first digitally augmented (and pathetically telegraphed) car bombing that sets Samir's gloomy tale in motion, which isn't to say it lacks for interest.

Traitor teeters along for a good while on technical competence and surface pleasure (Cheadle and Said Taghmaoui - as Samir's compatriot Omar - have an especially intriguing rapport) until a mid-movie narrative shift signals an overall preference for empty-headed reveals that significantly diminish the film's world, the plot machinations consistently trumping any and all emotional truth. Despite initial appearances, Cheadle remains every bit the movie star - there's only so far he can stray outside acceptable modes of behavior before having to reassure all in attendance that his and his character's actions are for an eventual greater good (not to give anything anyway beyond the fact that Samir is not who he appears to be).

Yet the more Traitor flatters its performer/producer's vanity (the halo around Samir quite literally grows, even as his facial expression remains the same), the sillier it becomes. The climactic suspense setpiece - a coordinated Thanksgiving Day attack in the heartland of America - is particularly risible, its "clever" endgame easily guessed from afar, and all the more offensive for how quickly it's brushed under the carpet, treated as an anecdotal afterthought (a suicide bomber strike within a fruited plains vacuum) with no discernible repercussions.

That's the real terror of our day and age: that any loss of life, whatever the underlying ideology from which it results, can be so callously disregarded in fact and fiction both.

Review:
Death Race 2000 was a cheesy 1975 action flick starring David Carradine and Sylvester Stallone. Now it’s been remade and stars Jason Statham and …. Joan Allen? Welcome to bizarro world. The budget may be bigger, but the remake, written and directed by Paul W.S. Anderson (famous, or perhaps infamous, for the Resident Evil film franchise and DOA: Dead or Alive) is just as cheese soaked. No, change that. Even more so.

The story is basically the same. Ex-con Jensen Ames (Statham) is forced by the warden (Joan Allen) of a notorious prison to compete in our post-industrial world’s most popular sport: a car race in which inmates must brutalize and kill one another in order to win. Unfortunately, Anderson films the race/battles with such clutter and criss-crossing that the action is confusing and, ultimately, boring. And the screenplay blows any chance of satire at our media/violence obsessed culture.

As for the cast, well, it’s a mixed bag. Statham is, well, Statham—a limited actor but with good B movie charisma. On the other hand, Allen looks and sounds so terribly out of place that every scene with her is jolting. Or unintentionally funny. The supporting cast ranges from good (Ian McShane, chewing the scenery with relish) to bland (Tyrese Gibson, looking bored) to bad (Natalie Martinez, serving merely as eye candy as Ames’ navigator/love interest).

The best thing that can be be said about Death Race is that it’s short (89 minutes). It just feels longer.............

Review:

What happens when a woman (Anna Faris) who has never known any life outside of the Playboy Mansion suddenly has to deal with the outside world? GEE, I dunno, she turns to hooking? She goes to college to become a neurosurgeon? Of course not, silly! She becomes House Mother to a sorority of misfit lesbian-ish monster girls who are really diamonds in the rough, of course! This one-joke fish out of water plot may sound familiar because it's been done so many times it stuns with its derivative chutzpah. Splash, Revenge of the Nerds, and Meatballs all come to mind.

Re-treaded plots are not always a bad thing, of course, when executed with at least a modicum of technical ability or style. Unfortunately, from the very first cringe-inducing uttereance of a scripted line onscreen by some dude, (who HAS to be a friend of the directors, I hope) you can tell that this film is simply not going to pan out.

None of this is lead Anna Faris' fault. She is a talented comedic actress, and if it weren't for her and her co-star Emma Stone this review would have consisted of two words: "1.Sh*t 2.Sandwich" and I would have left it at that.

Faris does what she can with what she'd given, and at times she even makes you forget how bad The House Bunny is. She's got a fantastic sense of the absurd: whether remembering people's names by repeating them back like the exorcist, or trying to get gum out of her hair in a protracted clumsy dance in a crowded restaurant, she carries it off with incredible innocence and subtlety. Alas the dead weight of the meandering, unfunny script, and brain dead direction is too great for her to carry by herself. She has a great career in front of her if The House Bunny doesn't stop it cold.

Emma Stone (Jonah Hill's slyly intelligent love interest from Superbad) also goes above and beyond as Natalie, the overly enthusiastic and truly nerdy leader of the misfit sorority. Her character verges on the irritating, which reminds us why these girls are outcasts. Perhaps this is the only aspect of the film that approaches realism.

The rest of the cast is rounded out with non-actors (Hugh Hefner) who torture us with their line delivery, and pros like Colin Hanks (Thankfully NOT playing a college student) and Beverly D'Angelo, who frankly phone it in.

Director Fred Wolfe, with only Strange Wilderness under his belt as a director, and Black SheepJoe Dirt as a writer, clearly holds the belief, common in SNL circles, that bad acting is somehow funny. It's not. It's not ironic, it's not silly, it's not mildly amusing: It's BAD. and

Writers Karen McCullah Lutz and Kirsten Smith of Legally Blonde fame clearly needed work, and ripped themselves off by re-treading the "Dumb Blonde Out of Water" plot-line. This time, however, given the weird sexploitation Playboy Mansion/sorority war subplots, the dumb blonde stuff comes off as offensive. Is the intended audience young dudes who can check out Ms. Faris' ass or young women who need "makeup tips"? Either concept induces nausea.

There are many ways in which a terrible film reaches the screen. Sometimes a great script comes along, the studio gets its hands on it, and through the process of "development" gets watered down, adjusted, and all around eff'd with until a bland piece of trash limps onto the screen. Sometimes, a talentless hack who's had maybe one lucky success believes that he/she can do no wrong and keeps creating garbage that people go see just because of the one lucky success, and somehow keeps getting money to produce more garbage. People who don't know any better praise it for fear of looking stupid for supporting him/her in the first place. Usually, though, a mediocre idea gets seized on by a mediocre executive who hires all his mediocre friends to produce something that is less than the sum of it's parts...

Yes, thats what probably produced The House Bunny, because boy does it stink on ice.

Review: Three parts School of Rock (minus the school), one part Almost Famous, The Rocker is an genial film about a rock ‘n’ roll fantasy come true, without any underlying messages about the value of music that pervaded the above-mentioned movies. Don’t be fooled: Despite its title, The Rocker isn’t really about rock ‘n’ roll. It’s more about middle-aged wish fulfillment whimsy set against a background of third generation Dashboard Confessional teenage pop-rock angst imagined by middle aged screenwriters who’ve watched way too much TRL. Though it has a few funny moments, like a three car garage band record, The Rocker will probably appeal only to young listeners who haven’t yet discovered that hair metal isn’t cool.

The titular Rocker is Robert “Fish” Fishman (Rainn Wilson), an immature 40 year old who’s been nursing a chip on his shoulder since he was kicked out of Vesuvius, the popular hair metal band he drummed for in the 80’s. A mixture of Poison and Motley Crüe, with a very funny Will Arnett as shaggy haired lead singer, Vesuvius have somehow managed to remain huge despite dressing in cheetah print spandex pants with matching coats and sounding like Led Zeppelin without balls (perhaps in the world of The Rocker, there never was a Nirvana). Fish loses yet another crap job and moves into his sister’s house where he discovers that his oft-neglected nephew Matt (Josh Gad) is playing in a band. Called A.D.D., the other members include emo front man Curtis (Terry Geiger) and cutie patootie Amelia (Emma Stone) (just guess what instrument she plays).

Of course A.D.D.’s drummer is conveniently removed from the band (in a genuinely comedic way) very soon into the film, giving Fish the perfect opportunity to slide onto the drummer’s stool. He promises to book A.D.D. a real show and delivers, convincing dopey eyed Curtis to let him stay in the band after a disastrous version of “In Your Eyes” ruins their prom night gig. A.D.D. shoots to fame when the band’s online practice session is uploaded onto YouTube, birthing the phenomenon known as “The Naked Drummer” (I wonder who that might be). Soon a smarmy music agent has shown up to send the band on a Midwest tour and Fish is once again on the road to success, this time riding the coattails of a bunch of post-punk kiddy poppers.

There’s not one moment in the film that’s unpredictable or unexpected, even though several obstacles are thrown in A.D.D.’s way to the top. Rainn Wilson abounds with charm and it’s not hard to root for him, even when the Dwight Schrute shtick is laid on a bit too thick. The fatherly relationship between Fish and Curtis is touching, though a romantic connection between Christina Applegate as Curtis’ mom and Fish is sadly underutilized. Many scenes in the film are very funny, such as one involving Demitri Martin as a committed music video director, but they are supported by such flimsy narrative tissue that they seem depressingly far and few between. Several times in the film interesting story threads are proposed, such as Applegate’s revelation that she used to be in an all girl punk band, then abandoned without reason. We are left thinking that we’d much rather see Applegate make a comeback than Fish.

In a way, The Rocker seems like a vehicle for musical wunderkind Teddy Geiger, who is apparently big with the kids. Though he has the best hair ever, Geiger can’t really act, a bad thing for a character that is supposed to be plumbing the depths of abandonment angst. Peter Cattaneo (The Full Monty) brings a light touch to the material but The Rocker is clearly indebted to the blueprint laid out by Almost Famous (or even That Thing You Do!, if you’re unkind) and pales in comparison to that masterful film. Relying mostly on sentiment to fill the gaps, The Rocker takes a Keith Moon approach to narrative: big start, big finish, middle doesn’t matter. It really wouldn’t matter if the film brought the rock, but, alas, the unfocused, underdeveloped Rocker doesn’t......

The money scene in "Mirrors" - the one the gore morons will lap up while the rest of us cringe in appalled disbelief - involves the hero's sister ripping her own jaw off until it flops obscenely beneath her face, spurting blood everywhere. But wait, there's more! The character has just hopped into the bathtub, so the carnage has been preceded by the sexual thrill of watching a hot Hollywood blonde disrobe. It's an old trick, this sex-and-death equation, but rarely deployed with such Pavlovian cynicism. If you find yourself aroused, I think a bell goes off in a lab somewhere.

The rest of the movie isn't quite as ugly, but it's still no prize. A remake of a 2003 Korean film, "Mirrors" is directed by Alexandre Aja, a French enfant terrible who makes torture porn with the frisson of art. (His "High Tension" and "The Hills Have Eyes" remake were big hits with horror cognoscenti and other perpetual adolescents.) He knows where to point the camera, but he still hasn't figured out why.

Kiefer Sutherland, casting about for gainful employment between bouts of saving the world on "24," plays Ben Carson, a troubled ex-New York City detective who takes a job as a night security guard at a burned-out department store. A malevolent presence soon reveals itself on the other side of the building's many mirrors. Worst-case scenario: Your own reflection can kill you.

That's a tiny bit scarier than the homicidal tree-pollen in the recent "The Happening," and it at least provides more opportunities for trendy bloodletting. Ben scampers around trying to solve the mystery of the haunted mirrors while keeping his sister (Amy Smart), estranged wife (Paula Patton), and two children (Cameron Boyce and Erica Gluck) from harm. The movie works up effective suspense for a while - Aja is much better with atmosphere than content - but that bathtub scene permanently queers the tone, and the explanation, when it finally comes, is a howler.

At nearly two hours, "Mirrors" is overlong for a summer horror toss-off, and the movie's three or four false endings make it seem even more of a haul. Or maybe it's the underwritten stupidity of everyone involved that grates on the nerves. At one point we get a glimpse of a car's side mirror with the usual warning, "Caution: Objects may be closer than they appear." "Load and lock," kids. Tropic Thunder is a raucous, raunchy ride through the jungl es of Vietnam. Okay it's actually the beautifully scenic countryside of Hawaii...but who's gonna be picky?

This i s a film about a film being made from a book written by a guy who survived the Vi etnam War. Make sense? Good. It starts off just as any of your favorite wart ime flicks with helicopters sweeping over lush foliage and kick-ass classic rock in the background. There are also numerous send-ups to popular films of the same genre that any fan would enjoy. But if you thought M*A*S*H was irreverent at tim es, you haven't seen anything yet. Did I mention the kick-ass soundtrack?

Don't be confused when the very beginning of the film takes you into several trailers from the stars of the faux film that is attempting to be made. I mention this because several audience members failed to realize this and proceeded to keep talking. That is annoying. So I am telling right now so you won't do it.

If you have seen the trailer, then you know the story. There are some actors and they each have their quirks. They also tend to be rather picky prima-donnas at time s. In order to get the film completed with as much realism as possible, the director decides to plop them in the real jungle and let them go. When he is removed quite unexpectedly from the production, the team is l eft alone to find their way back to safety. But there are some poppy growers in the area who have differe nt plans for these suspected DEA agents.

Yes, the story is convoluted as all Hell with so many characters going in so many different directions it can make you dizzy, but it is solidly funny.

My favorite aspect of the film is surely the amazing cast, including some very big-name c ameos. Some of the coolest people pop up here, including a hilarious dancing Tom Cruise. And each one delivers a performance that attests to them having had a helluva time making this movie. This fact trans lates so well that you can't help but have a good time watching it.

Robert Downey, Jr is great but I have to wonder how long it took his ravaged throat t o recover. He easily switches from gravel-throated sergeant to smooth Australian without missing a beat. "Want some? Get some!"

But Ben Stiller will not be outdone as he is once again at his comedic best. "This head movie makes my eyes rain."

Jack Black has his moments but tends to be overshadowed even by the lesser membe rs of the cast. His character as "the comedy star" could have been funnier but the writing, not his talent, could easily be blamed.

Nick Nolte and Danny McBride (Pineapple Express) share tons of screen time toget her and turn out some pure comedy gold.

For f ans of nasty humor, there are penis jokes galore and the p-bomb gets dropped regularly. If you are easily offended by this or pretty much anything else, yo u should steer clear. But if you like 'em dirty, then come ahead and be ready to laugh. Or as Downey would say (as swiped from The Deer Hunter) "di d i mao, di di mao."

The strength of The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants 2, like its unnumbered predecessor, lies in the appeal and complexity of the characters. The four friends who form the backbone of the narrative are warm, believable individuals. We like them. We care about them. Those things are enough to trump the various weaknesses and contrivances associated

with their storylines.

Part 2 opens by re-introducing us to the main characters and bringing us up to date about what has happened in their lives since we last encountered them. At that time, they were between their junior and senior years in high school; now, they're in college. They're headed home for the summer, but their time together is destined to be short as plans for the break are pulling them in different directions. They are learning the hard way that childhood friendships don't always survive the transitio

n to adulthood and, when they do, they are changed. The traveling, magical pants that somehow fit them all are still being shipped from one girl to the next, but their relevance is diminished. (And one wonders, after so much time without washing, what they smell like.)

Lena (Alexis Bledel) is studying painting and, after the collapse of her romance with her Greek boyfriend, Kostas (Michael Rady), she is exploring the possibility of entering into a new relationship. What director Sanaa Hamri and screenwriter Elizabeth Chandler (adapting from the popular series by Ann Brashares) have captured are the changes in young adulthood that mold us into the people we become. One character must confront death, another must consider the possibility of being a mother, and the others must face romance - all critical elements to the formation of one's personality. The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants 2 is about girls becoming women. It's about four young females discovering where they want to go in life and entering that phase with a mixture of excitement and trepidation. While there's nothing special about any of the mini-dramas that play out during the course of the movie, these characters make them compelling and interesting.

Credit the actors as much as the screenplay. Since the first The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants, only

one cast member has experienced a huge rise in profile, but her newfound fame as Ugly Betty hasn't impacted America Ferrera's portrayal of Carmen. In fact, the four returning leads all slip easily into their alter-egos' skins. Blake Lively is perhaps a little softer and Alexis Bledel a little flintier, but all-in-all, the actors provide satisfying versions of the characters they brought to life in 2005 - a little older and wiser, perhaps, but with the same hearts and souls.

It's curious that two of this summer's female-oriented movies have featured quartets of best friends. Other than that (and the obvious gender gap in the audience), there's little alike between The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants 2 and Sex and the City. This film has real characters, doesn't rel

y on vulgar humor, and doesn't wallow in superficiality. I'm not a member of the target demographic for either film, but where Sex and the City left me cold and irritated, The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants 2 won me over (much as its predecessor did). As chick flicks go, this is one men can attend with the expectation that they might just enjoy experiencing two hours alongside these down-to-earth, appealing characters.

Review:

Complaining that a stoner comedy isn't coherent is a little like griping about the lack of white linen tablecloths at McDonald's, but "Pineapple Express" is so filled with verve and wit for much of its running time that it's depressing to watch it devolve into genuine foolishness and borderline incoherence in its final act.

Up to then, "Pineapple" proves a very amusing hybrid movie combining the not-quite-grown-up man-boy humor of the Judd Apatow breed with the judiciously artful directorial style of indie auteur David Gordon Green ("George Washington," "All the Real Girls"). There are wonderfully comic sequences of THC-inspired slapstick and reams of the crude verbal wit that is becoming a trademark of co-writer and star Seth Rogen. But the cheerfully small story grows too big for itself, and the film ends in forced humor and frankly head-scratching meta-comedy. It's a fun ride for a while, but it's one of those benders that gives you a hangover even before it's through.

Rogen stars as Dale Denton, an absolutely useless guy who works as a process server, dates a high school girl and drives around in his beater car smoking weed and phoning into talk radio shows. Vaguely he aspires to be a call-in host himself. But he's too high most of the time to do anything about it. After he scores some particularly potent pot (the titular Pineapple Express) from Saul (James Franco), a dealer who clearly wants to be his best buddy, Dale witnesses a murder. He races from the scene but accidentally leaves a clue; the killers, who are engaged in a gang war for control of the local drug trade, are able to track him back to Saul.

So Dale and Saul go on the lam, trying to keep their skins and get somebody -- the police, say, or another drug dealer, or Saul's grandma -- to help them. But they're so stoned and, as is clear by now, so stupid, that none of their plans work or even make sense. In the course of their frenzy they fall in with another dope-addled slacker, Red (Danny McBride), and it's all they can do to keep from killing each other before the bad guys do it for them.

As I say, there's great comic verve in the thing, especially in the early going. Rogen and co-writer Evan Goldberg have acute ears for the combination of self-awareness and apathy that defines a certain type of delayed adolescence, whether that's manifested in Dale's relationship with a girl who still goes to a school with lockers and home rooms, or in Saul's efforts to understand just what a process server does for a living. Rogen and Franco fit their characters perfectly, and they bring homey familiarity to their rapport with each other. McBride, who has worked with Green before and starred in "The Foot Fist Way" earlier this year, adds bizarre spice to the mix -- a strange, unfocused energy with a drolly Southern savor.

Green, whose homemade movies are like tone poems that feel as if they're fearful of linear plotting and even normal logic, crafts a clean, spry film with hints of artiness sprinkled into a generally straightforward tack. He certainly doesn't seem to have insisted on having things his way, and it was a wise choice.

All of this is to the good -- which is why it's a letdown when the movie lapses into a silly shoot'em-up climax and, stranger, a coda that plays like a sketch TV version of Pirandello. It doesn't exactly kill the picture, but it definitely reneges on the giddy, bobbing comedy of the earlier passages. Maybe Bob Dylan had a point when he declared that "everybody must get stoned," but somebody associated with "Pineapple Express" ought to have sobered up for a moment and taken a stab at ending it more aptly.....

If you are looking forward to a hearty, but senseless laugh, Singh is Kinng is just the movie for you. It is a riot of laughs, but strictly not for those who want to use their brains. The storyline of ‘Singh is Kinng’, of ‘Good vs. Bad’ or ‘Triumph of Good over Evil’, has been repeated many times on screen, making it too clichéd. However, the way it has been presented on-screen, is what makes you stay put in the theater and be entertained.

One of the main reasons why the film doing well is Akshay Kumar. He completely gets into the character of the ‘Happy’, the male protagonist, and plays his part with perfection. You cannot help, but adore the gullible Sikh guy. He charms you with his simplicity and amuses you with his perfect comic timing. Akshay has once again proved that comedy is definitely his forte. Katrina Kaif is, as usual, looks pretty and does justice to her character.

As for the other performances, Ranvir Shorey, Sonu Sood, Javed Jaffery and Om Puri definitely entertain you. However, the film does have its share of flaws too. It keeps a fast pace in the first half, but slows down a bit in the second half. Some of the scenes, like the pre-climax with Javed Jaffery, could have been edited. All in all, ‘Singh is Kinng’ is a loud comedy. Leave behind your brains and you will definitely be laughing throughout the movie.

Review: The Bhatts never run out of stories. In their new outing Jannat, Mahesh and Mukesh Bhatt have yet another new story to tell. This time, it's all about match fixing and bookies. But wait! It would be erroneous to classify Jannat as a cricket-centric film. Cricket is just the wallpaper here. The focus is on the love story, like Gangster which was, at heart, a love story.What catches you by complete surprise is the fact that Jannat has been helmed by a debutante director [Kunal Deshmukh] and penned by, again, a debutante wordsmith [story: Vishesh Bhatt; screenplay Kunal Deshmukh and Vishesh Bhatt]. You're surprised at the level of maturity, the command over the craft, the display of confidence in theirHonestly, you don't take to Jannat instantly. The initial portions - the love story - are strictly chalta hai stuff. But the best part is, Jannat takes a step forward every 10 minutes. The film actually takes off when the characters reach Cape Town, South Africa. The portions thereafter are akin to a roller coater ride.Right from the interval point to a hair-raising, pulse-pounding climax, Jannat is another journey altogether. The end, especially, hits you like a ton of bricks. You can't imagine Jannat without Emraan Hashmi. Right from his debut film Footpath to Jannat, the actor has only grown with the passage of time. The actor displays the gamut of emotions with aplomb, he changes expressions like a chameleon changes colours. Jannat is yet another turning point in his career.In a nutshell, Jannat is one of the finest films to come out of Vishesh Films. Not to be missed! Arjun [Emraan Hashmi] is a reckless young man with an obsession for making money at card games. A chance meeting with a girl in a mall, Zoya [Sonal Chauhan], gives him the reasons he was looking for to move out of his ordinary life. He steps up from playing small-time card games to becoming a bookie.Stuck in a triangle of sorts between the woman he loves and his addiction to make a quick buck, Arjun steps into the world of match fixing. But his dizzy rise attracts the attention of the police [Samir Kochar].Arjun has to now choose between Zoya and this new-found success and power. As Arjun struggles to choose between the two, the Don [Jawed Sheikh] offers the forbidden apple of limitless wealth in exchange of his soul and draws him into his core entourage of money spinners.You may not be a cricket fan, but it's not difficult to decipher Jannat. In fact, the makers have refrained from using any technical jargon in the movie. Portions depicting match fixing and Emraan's interaction with the cricketers are, in fact, amongst the high points of the film. The speed at which Jannat unfolds and most importantly, the turn of events is the hallmark of this enterprise.Vishesh Films has an eye for talent and this time the prolific production house pulls up two more aces - director Kunal Deshmukh and writer Vishesh Bhatt. Kunal is a storyteller to watch out for. In the past decade, the Bhatts have nurtured several talents, prominent among them being Anurag Basu and Mohit Suri. Now add Kunal Deshmukh to the list. If you understand cinema, you'd realize that every sequence in Jannat is not only well-shot, but there's meat in those scenes too.Vishesh Bhatt's writing is dew-fresh and doesn't take the tried and tested route. Note the intermission point or the twists in the second hour as also the climax, the writer's contribution looms large in those portions. Pritam's music is lilting. The film has a hit score, but you'd like to single out two numbers - 'Zara Sa' and 'Jannat Jahan' - for the sheer melody.Manoj Soni's cinematography is first-rate. The stunning locales of Cape Town are filmed exquisitely. Sanjay Masoom's dialogues are excellent. A few dialogues, in fact, are refreshing to the ears. Background score [Raju Singh] is top notch.You can't visualize Jannat without Emraan Hashmi. If you loved him in Murder, Gangster and Awarapan, you'd place his performance in Jannat in the same league. Note the naughty streak as also the helplessness [at the interval point and towards the end]. An incredible performance indeed!Sonal Chauhan looks pretty and though she's passable in the initial portions, she gets into the groove eventually. This girl has the potential. Jawed Sheikh is brilliant. This is his finest work so far. Samir Kochar is excellent. Vishal Malhotra is good. Shakeel Khan does very well. Abhimanyu Singh is competent. Vipin Sharma leaves a mark in a brief role.On the whole, Jannat is a well-made film with lilting music, gripping script and excellent performances as its mainstay. Coupled with an absorbing second hour and a brilliant climax, the film has all it takes to prove a success story in times to come. Its solo release coupled with good hype should overcome the strong opposition.......Overall very nice movie...

Race directed by director duo Abbas – Mustan is a fast paced action thriller.
What works for Race is that you can never predict exactly whats gonna happen next. Just when you think, this could be the last twist in the tale, it surprises you with another twist. There is almost a twist in every reel!Directors Abbas – Mastan deserve credit for their execution, they succeed in holding your attention throughout the movie. The direction is complimented by the screenplay although the impact would have been much better had the story been more convincing. With so many twists and turns, the viewer after a certain point could get confused as to whose with who. Also it gets a little tedious to sit through.As far as the editing is concerned two songs can be easily chopped off for better impact. The music is brilliant, Pehli Nazar Mein stands out. Dialogues are superb. Cinematography brilliant! Release Date: March 21, 2008......
